Biography

Saint Pierrehenri Dorie, also known as Peter Henricus Dorie, was born on 23 September 1839 in St-Hilaire-de-Talmont, Vendée, France. He received his education at the seminaries of Sables-d’Olonne and Luçon, where he showed great promise in his studies. Following his ordination as a priest on 21 May 1864, Saint Pierrehenri Dorie joined the Paris Foreign Missions Society, dedicated to spreading the Catholic faith in foreign lands. With a deep desire to serve the Lord and share God's love, he was assigned to missionary work in Korea. As a missionary in Korea, Saint Pierrehenri Dorie faced numerous challenges and dangers. During this time, there was widespread persecution of Christians, with the government enforcing strict anti-Christian policies. Despite these hostile circumstances, Saint Pierrehenri Dorie remained strong in his faith and continued to preach the teachings of Christ. Tragically, he was captured by authorities during an anti-Christian persecution. Saint Pierrehenri Dorie endured unimaginable suffering as he was tortured for his refusal to renounce his faith. His persecutors subjected him to brutal treatment, including having quicklime thrown into his eyes, which resulted in his blindness. Yet, Saint Pierrehenri Dorie remained steadfast in his commitment to Christ and the Catholic Church. His unwavering faith inspired those around him and served as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Christian martyrs. Finally, on 7 March 1866, Saint Pierrehenri Dorie was mercilessly beheaded on a beach beside the Han River in Saenamteo, Seoul, South Korea. This act of martyrdom sealed his fate, and he gave his life as a courageous witness to his faith. In recognition of his heroic sacrifice, Pope Paul VI decreed the veneration of Saint Pierrehenri Dorie on 4 July 1968, acknowledging his martyrdom. Moreover, on 6 October 1968, he was beatified by Pope Paul VI, affirming his exceptional holiness and sanctity. Finally, on 6 May 1984, Saint Pierrehenri Dorie was canonized by Pope John Paul II, officially recognizing him as a saint of the Catholic Church. His canonization serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication shown by all those who suffer persecution for their faith and adhere fiercely to their religious beliefs. While there is no specific patronage assigned to Saint Pierrehenri Dorie, his steadfast example of faith and martyrdom invites individuals to seek his intercession, particularly in times of persecution or when facing challenges to the practice of their faith. The life of Saint Pierrehenri Dorie reminds us of the immense sacrifices made by missionaries and martyrs in their tireless efforts to spread the Gospel and uphold the teachings of Christ. May his example inspire us to remain steadfast in our own faith and to courageously bear witness to the love and truth of the Catholic Church.
