Biography

Wenceslaus I, also known as Václav [ˈvaːtslaf], was Prince (kníže) of Bohemia from 921 until his probable death in 935. According to legend, he was assassinated by his younger brother Boleslaus the Cruel. His martyrdom and the popularity of several biographies led to his reputation for heroic virtue, resulting in his sainthood. Wenceslaus I is celebrated on September 28 as a saint in the Catholic Church. He is also posthumously declared to be a king and patron saint of the Czech state. He is the subject of the well-known carol 'Good King Wenceslas,' which celebrates his virtues and good works, particularly his charity during winter weather.
