Blessed Luc Sy

Biography

Blessed Luc Sy, also known as Blessed Luc Siboriboun, was a married layman, school teacher, and catechist in the apostolic vicariate of Vientiane in modern-day Laos. He was born in Ban Pha Håk, Xieng Khouang, Laos, in 1938.

Blessed Luc Sy dedicated his life to teaching and spreading the Catholic faith amidst challenging circumstances in Laos during the 20th century. As a catechist, he played a crucial role in instructing and guiding local communities in their religious formation.

During this period, Laos faced political unrest and tension, particularly with the rise of communism. Christians, including Catholics, were subjected to persecution and oppression. Despite the risks, Blessed Luc Sy fearlessly and steadfastly continued his work, nurturing the faith of those under his care.

On March 7, 1970, Blessed Luc Sy tragically became a martyr for the faith. He was brutally killed in Den Din, Vientiane, Laos, for his unwavering dedication to Christianity.

In recognition of his sacrifice and his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith, Pope Francis declared Blessed Luc Sy a martyr on June 5, 2015. This decree acknowledged his martyrdom and his heroic virtue, elevating him to the rank of Blessed within the Catholic Church.

Furthermore, on December 11, 2016, Pope Francis officiated the beatification ceremony of Blessed Luc Sy in Vientiane, Laos. The celebration was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, signifying the global recognition of Blessed Luc Sy's martyrdom and his exemplary life.

As a Blessed, Luc Sy is venerated by the Catholic faithful on his feast day, which is celebrated annually on March 7. His life continues to serve as an inspiration and a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and dedication to spreading the Gospel, even in the face of adversity.
